RESA Standards; Teaching Mod 2 and Mod 3 Rebreather Courses

The Rebreather Education and Safety Association (RESA) was developed in order to aid in improving the education and safety in the rebreather industry and to ensure that the appropriate framework is in place that suits our growing industry.

This is a RESA standard for rebreather instructors that are already certified to teach Mod2 or Mod3 on one rebreather, and want to teach Mod2 or Mod3 on another rebreather.

RESA have been actively discussing rebreather training at the Normoxic (MOD 2) and Hypoxic (MOD 3) Trimix levels. Some instructors have been teaching advanced level courses to divers on units where the instructor only has minimal training. These instructors have only been required to pass a user course on the second and subsequent units. There have been no further industry-wide standards such as a minimum number of dives to have this privilege. Also, there has been no evaluation to prove that they understand the units properly.

Below is the standard that RESA members voted on. This standard was approved with a unanimous vote from both RESA Manufacturers and RESA Training Agencies. This standard is for Normoxic (MOD 2) and Hypoxic (MOD 3) Trimix training on additional rebreather’s only. For entry level training (MOD1) the instructor is required to be trained as a unit specific instructor by an IT for the specific rebreather.

The implementation date will be 1st January 2014.

SSI are proud to announce HEAD / MARES has signed an agreement to acquire Scuba Schools International (SSI). The effective date will be January 1st 2014.

In recent years, SSI has become one of the fastest growing training agencies in the world. Dive Centers and Resorts alike are turning to SSI for the depth and quality of their training materials, plus their “signature” business support. With more than 40 years of experience, innovative products like Swim, Freediving and Extended Range keep SSI in the forefront of both the active diver and new consumer. This is only possible through the SSI network of 2500 plus Dive Centers and Resorts around the world providing "The Ultimate Dive Experience!"

Mares logo, Doug McNeese, Robert Stoss, Gerald Skrobanek, MARES, Rosemary E Lunn, Roz Lunn, The Underwater Marketing Company, Paul ToomerLooking at the depth of the HEAD product lines, one is struck by the obvious. Not only is HEAD one of the leading manufacturers of many well known sporting goods brands, they also own MARES, one of the world’s 3 leading diving equipment brands. Their products are a perfect match with SSI – Swimming, Snorkeling, Freediving, Spearfishing and Scuba. With direct subsidiaries in most developed countries, MARES also has distributors in 50 other countries.

You are probably wondering how will this change affect me? The short and simple answer is – it won’t. Rest assured, SSI will continue to focus on its current Business Model – Swim, Snorkel and Scuba. MARES will continue to build high quality diving equipment. You can expect the same emphasis on building strong relationships with both companies and “even more” with SSI’s development and quest for creating the finest education system in the diving industry. All will be based on supporting you, the retailer and resort, promoting equipment sales, continuing education and travel.

SSI will continue to maintain relationships with ALL major manufacturers, just like MARES will with all other training agencies. In other words, there is no obligation for a MARES dealer to do business with SSI or an SSI dealer to do business with MARES. But, what you can count on is there will be many new business opportunities for you.

In order to integrate these two businesses, this merger will trigger various organizational changes. Our goal is to make this transition as seamless for you, our customers. All will take time in order for us to make the “right” decisions. For your comfort, here are some details to ease your mind:

The entire SSI management team will remain in place and continue their daily responsibilities.

Both the SSI USA and SSI EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) offices will be maintained. Some operational and back office functions will be merged into the HEAD/MARES organization:

SSI USA will remain the Service Center for the USA and Canada.

We hope you are as excited about the future as we are and what this can do for both companies and more importantly – YOU! What we can promise is unequaled business support for our dive centers and professionals. This will remain the pillar of our business.

Bringing these 2 companies together represents a huge paradigm shift for the diving industry and a tremendous growth opportunity. Welcome to a new direction, SSI / MARES. Prepare to be amazed!

Are you a North Carolina diver? DAN has a free talk tonight!

DAN is renowned for their educational lectures and they regularly put on a series of free seminars at the DEMA Show that all dive professionals can access.

Scuba Diving, Safety First sign, DAN, Divers Alert Network Research lectures, Dr Richard D Vann, Dr Petar Denoble, Dr Neal W Pollock, Rosemary E Lunn, Roz Lunn, The Underwater Marketing Company, Shabbar Ranapurwala

For the last three years, DAN HQ in Durham (North Carolina) has been running a bi-monthly diving medicine / research / safety series of lectures at their office in West Colony Place. The talk is held on the first Wednesday of every other month at 19:00. This programme provides an excellent opportunity for anyone with a thirst for diving knowledge to listen to a variety of local experts discuss dive medicine, research, and safety.

Tonight's lecture (Wednesday 4th December 2013) is entitled "Cultivating Safe Behaviors in Recreational Diving," and will be given by Shabbar Ranapurwala.

For those of you unfamiliar with Mr Ranapurwala, he is a Research Assistant at DAN.

We have long known that a majority of the recreational diving fatalities and injuries are caused by preventable diving mishaps, errors or incidents. These mishaps occur due to human errors, equipment problems, or environmental conditions. Many groups have suggested that preventing mishaps may prevent injuries and fatalities. A pre-dive checklist sounds like a logical solution, however, only a minority of recreational divers actually use a checklist in the field. The purpose of this talk is to share the results of DAN’s summer 2012 randomized trial using a pre-dive checklist.

Doors will open at 18:15 for a pre-event social, and 'Down Under' very kindly serve light refreshments. The presentation begins at 19:00 and will last approximately 45 - 55 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session.

Admission to the lecture is free, and no registration is required. So come early, come hungry and hear Shabbar wax lyrical about appropriate diving behaviours. Incidentally Shabbar Ranapurwala will also be giving the first lecture of the 2014 series. He will be discussing "Diving Injuries, Beyond DCS and AGE," on Wednesday 5th February.
